The thing is … you may have a million ideas floating around in your head, but only a few of those will really be worthy to see the light of day. Whether you have no idea, or too many ideas, you are still without that one special idea. Listed below are tips to help you find that special idea that is right for you.

Write down all your ideas on a piece of paper, even if you think some of them are silly. Next, write down  the following information:

  • Your Strengths: These are things that you know more about than other people and may also include a natural talent.
  • Your Interests: Include hobbies and pleasurable pastimes.
  • Problems: List problems that you have faced and problems other people are facing.

You may find a strong pattern if you compare your answers – your strengths and interests may be the answer to problems people are facing. Determine whether you would be able to fix those problems through applying your strengths and interests as a solution.

Take a look at your list and pick out the idea that appeals to you most. Research your idea:

  • Google: Find at least five websites that do the same as what you want to do. Browse through them and look at what  they are doing. Pay attention to prices, products and services they provide.
  • Amazon: Search for your topic and note whether the books on this subject are in demand. This is a good way to find out if there is a demand for what you have to offer.
  • Comments: Read testimonials and comments on sites related to your topic and find out what the problems are that need to be solved. How do current businesses manage their clients? Are there ways to improve? What would you be able to offer that could give your business a unique touch?

Talk to people, the more the better. Interacting with people will add a valuable component to your research – ask people what problems they are experiencing and whether they have tried to find solutions for it. You should also talk to business owners that offer services and products related to your idea. The most important thing to remember is that you should LISTEN. Listen to your potential customers and find out what they need.
